Have a digital camera but only use the automatic settings?  The North Lakeland Discovery Center will offer a three part workshop on Digital Photography starting Tuesday January 31st where you can learn to use the manual settings of your camera to get the most from each shot.  The workshop runs three consecutive nights from 4:30-6:00pm and will cover digital photography basics, editing and composition.

Part One: Photography Basics. Optics, lighting, F-stops, ISO, shutter speeds - what they are and how to use them to take beautiful images. Tuesday, Jan 31.
PartTwo: Applying Manual Settings to Nature Photography. Apply concepts from Part One to the great outdoors including how it all applies to weather, animal movement, and setting up the perfect shot. Wednesday, Feb 1.
PartThree: Digital Editing. Explore the simple things like cropping, balance, and exposure adjustments with basic editing software to create your best pictures yet! Thursday, Feb 2.

All classes are held at the Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters.  Registration is $18 ($15 for Discovery Center members) per class, or register for all three to save $5. To register or for more information, visit www.DiscoveryCenter.net or call (877) 543-2085.

“Invasiveness” the topic of Research Review at the Discovery Center
Each month the North Lakeland Discovery Center hosts a free research review to the community.  This month the topic is ‘Invasiveness’.
This is an opportunity to hear about the research and monitoring we're doing here at the Center, as well as a time to delve into the history of the concept itself. What makes a species invasive versus non-native? We'll explore the variables that influence invasiveness and how we are using that information to preserve our Northwoods native populations.

Held at the Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters.  Registration is free for everyone, donations are welcome and go directly to support our research done at the Discovery Center. To register or for more information, visit www.DiscoveryCenter.net or call (877) 543-2085.

Live Owl “Orion” at Manitowish Waters Koller Memorial Library
The third of the North Lakeland Discovery Center’s monthly Brown Bag Series

This month we host Trees for Tomorrow naturalist Troy Walters and his Great Horned Owl Orion as they teach about the amazing adaptations of owls.

Explore a hands-on display of talons, skulls and study skins as well and meet the live owl.  Held at the Manitowish Waters Koller Memorial Library.  Free.  Donations appreciated.

Join the Discovery Center for an afternoon winter waterfall adventure.

Waterfalls in Winter - Adults
Date: Saturday 01/14/2012 10AM - 3PM

We’ll visit 4 different waterfalls from 15 to 30 feet in size and will be traveling from the U.P. to Northern Wisconsin in the Discovery Center van. While exploring the falls we’ll discuss the complex geology of the Gogebic and Penokee Iron range, which at one time was taller than mount Everest. Today, they show us the base of the mountain and the rocks are aged to be some of the oldest in the world.

Make sure to bring a camera for this winter wonderland experience.

Bring a pair of snowshoes or rent a pair at the Center.
We’ll meet at the Discovery Center at 10am and return by 3pm.

Pack a lunch. Call early to reserve your spot, or click here to register.
